How To Catch A Break and Avoid Getting Stuck

Isn’t life ironic? The very things that I write about in my books and articles all seem to be currently making themselves known prominently. All of the tragedy, fear, and awkward experiences all hitting at the same time.

Just because I have dealt these things before, doesn’t mean I am immune to them. There is always going to be a new struggle, a new problem, a new situation.

Part of the reason I want to do what I do is to avoid stacking these as much as possible. If I were still dealing with my first broken engagement, following relationships are prone to be more difficult, much less the struggle of breaking off a second engagement.

But to still carry all of that while dealing with the death of a loved one and each progressive issue that has come since then simply compounds the pain. It becomes harder to deal with any of it, much less move past any of it. The overwhelm alone gets out of control.

If all of this is compounded to the point that daily life is getting too difficult, what happens when you have a minor car issue? Or you get a new project at work?

We can’t really deal with any kind of change at all. It doesn’t matter how minor, it suddenly becomes completely insurmountable.

I don’t want to beat around the bush today. I don’t have time to go super in depth. There is too much going on. Not only in my life, but also in yours. You don’t have time to spend all day reading this.

The point is, we need to make a change. Change is good. Not bad. But we have to be the one to initiate it and turn our life in the direction that we want.

I may have a lot of things going on in my life, but I’m not going to just sit here and lick my wounds.

I have been re-reading one of my favorite books: The Anatomy of Peace. It is one I read at least every year and is one of the few textbooks I kept after college. This go-around, I keep getting this message reverberating over and over in my head about helping things go right.

Often when we have problems, we focus on fixing them. We spend a lot of time getting nitty gritty trying to fix this problem. Don’t get me wrong, that is important. But sometimes, the best way to fix a problem is to do better next time. The best thing we can do is to help other things go right. Otherwise, it is so easy to lose all hope that anything will ever be good again.

In the face of so many challenges, the hard part is simply to pick one thing. One thing that you just need to go right. Forget about everything else.

It doesn’t matter how big or how small that one thing is. Yesterday, I got the dishes done. It may seem like a small thing, but it felt huge, given the fact that our water heater is broken and there were several days worth of dishes piling up. I boiled water, poured it into the stopped sink with soap and a few dirty dishes.

But for some reason, that one thing felt so important and made a HUGE impact on my day. Not only did I get something accomplished and have a quick win for the day, but the house was suddenly cleaner and less stifling. Not to mention less smelly.

I just needed that ONE THING to go right. And wouldn’t you know it, my dad got the water heater fixed yesterday. My car is being towed into the city today to get fixed. I am managing to work my 8 hrs per day for my job. I finally have an article written!

These are small things.

They don’t help a grieving family deal with the loss of a loved one. They don’t heal rifts between family members. It doesn’t keep people out of the hospital.

But you know what it does do?

It keeps me sane. It keeps me moving in the right direction. It gives me encouragement.

Just pick one thing — no matter how big or small — and help something go right.

You will be amazed at the difference it can make. Not just for you, but how much that one thing that was bothering you was also bothering someone else.

It’s the little things that lead to big things.

Books are written word by word. Relationships are healed one interaction at a time.

Life is lived day by day and moment to moment.

Go do something good and be proud of it.
