Sometimes, life is just out of control. Things happen at a rapid pace and we can barely keep up. Between work, family, keeping a social life, maintaining your health, projects you should be working on and it’s all we can do to move from one activity to the next.

Of course we are going to take a break once in a while, we need it with all the crazy. It’s the only way to keep going. Or is it?

Sometimes barely keeping our head above water, especially for long periods of time, could actually be doing more harm than good. So what else are we supposed to do? It’s not like we can just take a hit and (*gasp*) fail!

Can we?

Part of the power of failure is that you get a chance to stop. You stop reacting and get to look around. You stop spinning your wheels and find a direction. So while failing may seem counter-intuitive and something we should avoid at all costs, it’s one of the fastest ways to stop and take control of your story.

I recently did a podcast with my friend Cayla Vidmar about how to take control of your story. Take a listen.

We discuss several ideas that will allow us to move forward. Below are some of my favorites:

Open Doors

Cayla and I discuss several different opportunities that come into our lives as we own our stories.

Being open with every part of our lives and taking the good with the bad, we can have a clearer view of the direction we need to take in order to get where we want to be.

Connections

All of the hard things that we deal with, all of the awkwardness that is our lives connect us with others. Own these experiences and be open with them.

We are not the first to fail. We will not be the last. We aren’t the first to suffer, or be embarrassed. These experiences allow us to find others who help us through these times and those we can help as well.

Self-Reliance

Taking control of our stories does mean doing hard and scary things. And while there will be times that we fail, we then know for next time how to do it better.

We are capable and we can do this. Whatever “this” is to you, it’s never as scary as the first time. Do it once and success or failure, you now know the process. Do it again. Do it better.

Now What?

Not quite sure how to take control? How to take ownership of those things you don’t like? Get my free guide Control Your Story for tips of how to use every trait you have, rather than working against yourself.

Get it here and take control of the crazy.
